A new dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management has been named at UW-Stout.
The appointment of Daniel Freedman was announced Monday, June 5, by Glendalí Rodríguez, UW-Stout provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.
Freedman will be responsible for overseeing 24 undergraduate and 10 master’s programs, eight academic departments and the schools of engineering and management.
He is dean of the School of Science and Engineering at State University of New York, New Paltz, where under his leadership five new academic programs were developed and SSE enrollment doubled.
He also is director of the Hudson Valley Additive Manufacturing Center at SUNY New Paltz. The center manufacturers prototypes, jigs, molds, fixtures and final use parts with an array of state-of-the-art 3D printers. It also provides advice on additive manufacturing processes and materials for the campus and regional businesses.
Freedman received a SUNY New Paltz Excellence in Teaching award and a New Paltz Chamber of Commerce Community Impact award.
“Dr. Freedman brings significant higher education leadership experience to UW-Stout. His accomplishments and interests reflect a clear commitment to student success and success that is achieved across applied, interdisciplinary partnerships with faculty, staff, students, business and industry, and alumni,” Rodríguez said.
“I am excited to welcome him to the UW-Stout community and look forward to working with him and CSTEMM on our goals as Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University,” she added.
Freedman has an inorganic chemistry Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Macalester College in St. Paul. He is a Wisconsin native, originally from Windsor in Dane County.
“I am truly thrilled to be joining the UW-Stout community,” he said. “I have spent most of my career as an educator, scientist and administrator creating and promoting applied learning opportunities and collaborative partnerships. I am looking forward to continuing this work at UW-Stout, where these ideas are central to the mission of the university.”
Freedman will begin work on Monday, Aug. 7, at UW-Stout.
He replaces Gindy Neidermyer, who retired. Neidermyer was interim CSTEMM dean for three years, part of a 25-year career at UW-Stout.
