Sixteen students receive Potential for Excellence Scholarship

College announces other awards to wrap up academic year

The College of Education, Hospitality, Health and Human Sciences at University of Wisconsin-Stout recently awarded scholarships to 16 students, along with announcing other awards for the 2017-18 academic year.

The students received the Potential for Excellence Scholarship at the recent Celebration of Teaching and Learning event on campus. The $1,000 scholarship, awarded for the 2018-19 academic year, was established with alumni support to enhance the CEHHHS goal of recruiting and retaining high achieving and diverse students.

The students, 10 undergraduates and six from the Graduate School, were selected by a committee based on essay responses, program directors or other recommended input and evidence of scholarly achievement.

The undergraduate students, hometowns and majors are:

  • Kyla Bergstrom, of Cumberland, family and consumer sciences education
  • Zoe Foster, of River Falls, human development and family studies
  • Callie Loeschke, of Cannon Falls, Minn., dietetics
  • Kathryn Marks, of Westby, dietetics
  • Skye Mucha, of Marathon, human development and family studies
  • Emily Parsons, of Eau Claire, dietetics
  • MaKayla Pederson, of Chatfield, Minn., human development and family studies
  • Yuepheng Vang, of Onalaska, real estate property management
  • Choua Xiong, of Milwaukee, dietetics 
  • Zong Xiong, of Eau Claire, dietetics

The graduate students, hometowns and programs are:

  • Kathleen Baker, of Eau Claire, career and technical education 
  • Stephanie Clark, of St. Paul, school counseling
  • Amy Cook, of Green Bay, school psychology 
  • Faryal Khan, of St. Paul, marriage and family therapy
  • Geraldine T. Krause, of Elk Mound, clinical mental health counseling
  • Danielle LaCost, of Merrillan, clinical mental health counseling

  • Student Organization of the Year: Stout Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, for supporting local teachers and businesses and a children’s hospital
  • Service Learning Project of the Year: Children’s Art Club, for working with local children ages four to 16
  • Maybelle Ranney Price Professorship: Professor Desiree Budd, psychology
  • Merle M. Price Mentor/Mentee: Associate Professor Alicia Stachowski and Assistant Professor Mihyang An, psychology

Top teacher awards went to eight CEHHHS faculty members, one from each department, based on nominations from students and college faculty:

  • Amanda Barnett, associate professor, human development and family studies
  • Julie Bates-Maves, associate professor, rehabilitation and counseling
  • Matthew Giguere, lecturer, School of Hospitality Leadership
  • Kathryn Hamilton, associate professor, psychology
  • Carol Johnson, associate dean, school counseling, school psychology and special education
  • Mary LaRue, senior lecturer, physical education
  • Kevin Mason, associate professor, teaching, learning and leadership
  • Karen Ostenso, assistant professor, food and nutrition

The college offers 19 undergraduate and 10 Graduate School programs.
